NEWELL, S.D. – Take a large group of volunteers and a labor of love and what you get is a community-wide celebration that attracts thousands of people to Newell over the Labor Day weekend.

Now in its 67th year, the Newell Labor Day Celebration, Sept. 3 – Sept. 7, 2026, has become a family tradition that offers something for everyone, says Newell Community Club volunteer Cheyenne Winkler.

Ambassadors for the event were selected following competition held last weekend. Little Miss Newell Labor Day is Windsor Erickson, Junior Miss Newell Labor Day is Ella Roberts and Miss Newell Labor Day is Kaydence Lei.

Before festivities really get underway, the Cowboys for Christ Church Service is set for Thursday, Sept. 3 at the Ram Sale building beginning at 6:30p.m. The following days are filled with a Ranch Rodeo, the J.D. Mutchler Memorial team roping and FFA goat roping, kids games, a Tractor Pull, a Quilt Show, 5K Run & Walk, Corn Hole Tournament, dancing, Open Rodeo, the Newell Museum is open, a Car Show, there’s the Fireman’s Barbeque, a Beef Frank Cookout (as in hotdogs but really good ones from Midwest Meat Locker), a parade and more.

This year’s Ranch Rodeo on Sat., Sept. 5th is featuring something called the Cowboy Mini Jeep Race.

A big attraction is the Parade on Labor Day with the theme, “Let Freedom Ring.” This year’s Parade Marshalls are veterans who live in Butte County.
