STURGIS, S.D. – The South Dakota High School Finals Rodeo wrapped up over the weekend in Fort Pierre, and it was an unforgettable run for Arina Haugen of Sturgis.

Haugen brought home titles, in the Barrel Racing, Goat Tying and Pole Bending while finishing second in the Girls Cutting and third in the Reined Cow Horse.

Haugen talked with KBHB Sports and says the Goat Tying was a special win for her this year.

“It’s not my favorite event, but my sister, Landry, and I talked about it a lot, and she let me use her horse and that made it fun.”

Haugen ran her horse Chili for the Barrel Racing and Pole Bending titles. Haugen says Chili loves the Pole Bending.

“She’s really fast at it,” Haugen said. “We hit a couple poles in the short round and it got deep on the end pole, so our timing got off. But, I had enough points in the previous round that I could give myself some room”

Although she posted her worst time of the three performances in the short-go, it was her first and second-go times that helped her get the win.

Arina is now preparing for the National High School Finals Rodeo.

“I am thrilled,” Haugen said. “I think my horses are going to be really good there. I love a bigger crowd, and I love some more pressure so I’m just excited to see where it goes.”

The National High School Finals Rodeo runs July 19 through the 25 at Lincoln, Nebraska.
