NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Dolly Parton, the beloved music and film star known for her vibrant personality and poignant songwriting, has died. She was 80 years old. Her career spanned decades, with hits like “Jolene” and “I Will Always Love You.” Born in Tennessee, she rose from humble beginnings to become a country music icon. Her partnership with Porter Wagoner helped launch her career, and she later became a successful actor and businesswoman. Parton was also a philanthropist, founding her Imagination Library to promote children’s literacy. Her charm and humor made her a beloved figure across generations and political divides.
Her last show in South Dakota was at the Deadwood Mountain Grand on July 23, 2016, for her Pure & Simple Tour.
“Booking Dolly Parton was one of those moments that felt absolutely surreal to all of us.” Said Danielle Osloond of the Deadwood Mountain Grand. “We knew then how fortunate and deeply honored we were to have her grace the stage at Deadwood Mountain Grand, so today, that privilege feels even more profound. There is not another human on this planet that could spread love like Dolly. We will forever be grateful that Deadwood Mountain Grand was able to share in her lifetime story, and even more grateful for the memory of bringing her to our tiny little mountain town.”

Some of her setlist songs included “Train, Train,” “Why’d You Come in Here Lookin’ Like That,” “Jolene,” “Pure & Simple,” “Precious Memories,” “My Tennessee Mountain Home,” “Coat of Many Colors,” “Smoky Mountain Memories,” “Applejack,” “Banks of the Ohio,” “The Seeker,” “I’ll Fly Away,” “Outside Your Door,” “The Grass Is Blue,” “Do I Ever Cross Your Mind,” “Two Doors Down,” “Here You Come Again,” “Islands in the Stream,” “9 to 5,” and “I Will Always Love You.”
Dolly also played in 2002 for a benefit at the Washington Pavilion in Sioux Falls to launch the Imagination Library statewide and in Rapid City on July 28th, 1978. The 1978 concert at the Rapid City Civic Center, now The Monument, sold 7,220 tickets with ticket prices ranging from $6.50 to $7.50.
