RAPID CITY, S.D. — Black Hills Area Habitat for Humanity has added a new member to its board of directors, bringing decades of construction industry experience to the organization as it continues its work addressing affordable housing needs across the Black Hills.
Rapid City native Brett McManigal, a contractor salesman at Mead Lumber, has joined the organization’s board, serving alongside seven other community leaders.
McManigal brings more than 20 years of experience in the construction industry, primarily working on the material supply side. His professional background also includes industrial engineering and work focused on improving manufacturing efficiencies in South Dakota and Wisconsin.
In 2023, McManigal earned a U.S. patent for developing a more affordable thermally insulated wood stud, one example of the problem-solving experience Habitat leaders believe will benefit the organization as it works to expand affordable housing opportunities in the region.
“I’m grateful to have Brett McManigal join our board to complement the current board leadership,” Board President Jason Miller said. “Brett’s experience in construction leadership will help propel us to even further heights as we continue to serve our partner families with affordable home and affordable home repair in 2026 and beyond.”
McManigal’s addition comes as affordable housing continues to be a major focus for Black Hills Area Habitat for Humanity. The organization works with families and community partners to build and repair affordable homes while providing resources and financing designed to help families achieve long-term stability and self-reliance.
Since 1990, Black Hills Area Habitat for Humanity has served more than 423 families locally and globally. The nonprofit also operates Habitat ReStore locations in Rapid City and Spearfish, where donated items are sold to help generate funding for its housing mission.
For McManigal, joining the board provides another opportunity to put his construction knowledge and problem-solving background to work in the community he calls home.
Outside of his professional career, McManigal enjoys spending time outdoors with his family. Hiking, hunting, fishing and camping are among his favorite activities, with many weekends spent at the family’s campsite in Pierre.
Black Hills Area Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit Christian housing organization dedicated to creating affordable housing opportunities and helping ensure more families have access to a safe and decent place to call home.
