RAPID CITY, S.D. — A new Pilates studio emphasizing inclusivity, mindful movement and community connection is set to open in Rapid City later this month.
Black Hills Core Collective (BHCC) will open to the public Feb. 23 at 1727 W. Main St., offering primarily reformer Pilates classes in a low-impact, welcoming environment designed for all experience levels.
Owner Kassidi Martinez, a Hill City native, said the studio was born from both a personal connection to Pilates and a desire to cultivate an inclusive, welcoming fitness environment.
Why Pilates?
“Pilates came into my life at a time where I really needed it,” Martinez said. “It really changed my life. I saw an opportunity that the Black Hills could use more reformer studios, and I just took it.”
Martinez, an experienced Pilates instructor, said Pilates focuses on controlled, mindful movement that builds strength, stability and mobility.
“It’s really low impact,” she said. “It’s good for people recovering from injury, people who are pregnant, people who’ve just had a baby, older people, younger people. There’s something for everyone.”
Inclusivity and Accessibility
As far as core values for Black Hills Core Collective, Martinez says an open, judgement free zone is paramount.
“You don’t have to be fit. You don’t have to be a supermodel,” she said. “You can come as you are. We have modifications and advancements for every type of person.”
Reformer Pilates, previously unaffordable for some, may see a rise in accessibility in the Black Hills: BHCC is also offering sliding-scale pricing for those who qualify based on income.
“If Pilates feels out of reach financially, we’re willing to work with you,” Martinez said. “I haven’t really seen many other places do that.”
An Emphasis on Community
Community involvement is central to the studio’s mission. Martinez plans to include local art in the studio, collaborate with local businesses and host events that encourage connection both inside and outside the studio.
A grand opening celebration is scheduled for Feb. 21 at the studio location on 1727 W. Main St. This event will feature local vendors including custom embroidery, flash tattoos, a soda bar, catering, and more.
Classes at Black Hills Core Collective will run a wide variety of times to accommodate different schedules. Martinez plans to expand offerings in the future include mat Pilates, strength-based formats and restorative classes.
Above all, Martinez and the Black Hills Core Collective team are committed to fostering a fun, healthy environment for all.
“I want people to walk in here and instantly feel welcomed and at home,” she said. “I want this space to feel like your community.”
More information, including schedules and memberships, is available on the studio’s website and Instagram.
