RAPID CITY, S.D. – The Tony Award-winning musical “Hadestown” is heading to Rapid City this fall as part of the 2026-27 Broadway Season at The Monument.

The acclaimed show will play in Rapid City at The Monument from Oct. 21 to Oct. 22. Tickets go on sale Friday, July 1 at 10 a.m. and can be purchased at the Bluepeak Ticket Offices at The Monument, online at themonument.live, or at the Ellsworth Air Force Base Outdoor Rec Offices.

“Hadestown” won eight 2019 Tony Awards, including Best New Musical, as well as the 2020 Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album. Recognized as the most honored show of the 2018-2019 Broadway season, it was also honored with four Drama Desk Awards, six Outer Critics Circle Awards including Outstanding New Broadway Musical, and the Drama League Award for Outstanding Production of a Musical.

Created by singer-songwriter and Tony Award winner Anaïs Mitchell and developed with original director and Tony Award winner Rachel Chavkin, “Hadestown” marks the first time in over a decade that a woman has served as the solo author of a musical by writing the music, lyrics, and book. Mitchell is only the fourth woman in Broadway history to accomplish this creative feat. The production was co-conceived by Ben t. Matchstick.

Critics have lauded the production throughout its run. Catey Sullivan of the Chicago Sun-Times called the musical, “Scorching! Stunning! Both unmistakably timely and irresistibly entertaining.”

Charles McNulty of the Los Angeles Times wrote, “Mesmerizing! Hadestown arrives in smoldering fashion. Unfurling like a dream, the show achieves a fluidity of musical theater storytelling that makes an old tale seem startlingly new.”

Vogue welcomed audiences to the world of “your next musical theater obsession.”

The genre-defying musical blends modern American folk music with New Orleans-inspired jazz to reimagine an ancient tale. Following two intertwining love stories – that of young dreamers Orpheus and Eurydice, and that of King Hades and his wife Persephone – “Hadestown” invites audiences on a journey to the underworld and back, pitting industry against nature, doubt against faith, and fear against love.

The project originated as Mitchell’s indie theater project touring Vermont before turning into an album. “Hadestown” held its world premiere at New York Theatre Workshop in 2016, becoming the longest-running show in the theater’s 40-year history. The production made its Canadian premiere at Edmonton’s Citadel Theatre in 2017, followed by a sold-out engagement at London’s National Theatre in 2018.

Development was funded by the Eli and Edythe Broad Stage at the Santa Monica College Performing Arts Center and further developed by The Ground Floor at Berkeley Repertory Theatre.

The show opened at the Walter Kerr Theatre on Broadway on April 17, 2019, playing sold-out houses before performances were suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic. “Hadestown” resumed performances Sept. 2, 2021, as one of the first musicals to reopen on Broadway, where it continues to play today.

The Grammy-winning Hadestown Original Broadway Cast Recording is available at Hadestown.com/music, produced by David Lai, Sickafoose, and Mitchell on Sing It Again Records.

Tickets are available at themonument.live or at the Bluepeak Ticket Office.
