Pierre, SD – Rapid City Central Cobblers ran into a tough test Saturday, dropping both ends of a doubleheader to Pierre T.F. Riggs Governors by scores of 12-1 and 5-0.
In the opener, Pierre built an early lead and never let up, pulling away with a six-run sixth inning to secure the 12-1 win. Sonnenschein powered the Governors’ offense, going 4-for-4 with four RBIs, including a run-scoring single in the first inning that helped spark a quick 2-0 advantage. He later added another RBI single in the third and a double during the sixth-inning surge.
Pierre’s big sixth inning featured contributions throughout the lineup. O’Bryan doubled in a run, Brecken added an RBI single, and Schiefelbein delivered a three-run triple as the Governors finished with 11 hits and eight stolen bases.
Mailloux took the loss for Central, allowing six runs (three earned) over 3 1/3 innings while striking out four. Neuharth earned the win, holding the Cobblers to one unearned run on four hits over six innings.
Central’s lone RBI came from Gregory, while Farnsworth, Solano, Uttecht and Mailloux each recorded a hit.
The nightcap followed a similar script, though in a tighter, pitcher-dominated game. Pierre scored twice in the first inning and rode a dominant performance from Templeton to a 5-0 victory. Templeton tossed a one-hit shutout, striking out 11 and walking three.
Uttecht pitched well in defeat for Central, allowing five runs (three earned) on seven hits over six innings with four strikeouts.
Offensively, the Cobblers managed just one hit again from Uttecht while Pierre was led by Schiefelbein, who went 3-for-3 and set the tone atop the lineup. Schiefelbein also stole two bases as the Governors continued to pressure Central on the basepaths.
Pierre played clean defense in the second game, committing no errors.
Rapid City Central is scheduled to travel to Gillette for its next game Wednesday. Central will also be playing Spearfish Thursday before heading east river for a double header against Redfield on Saturday and a double header against Aberdeen on Sunday.
