RAPID CITY, SD – Tuesday night, the Central High School varsity girls’ basketball team defeated the Douglas Patriots at the central high school Naaz gym. I asked Varsity Girls head coach Tia Young how she thought the game went and what helped them get this big win. She said the team “started off a little slow and weren’t as focused as we could have been,” but after regrouping during halftime they “played more disciplined basketball” and showed confidence in the second half. Coach Young decided to include some of their younger backup players in the last few minutes of the game and Senior captain Chloe Shreve said she was proud of the younger players; it was great to see them get opportunities and make lots of shots at the end of the game.
Leah Landry led the team’s victory with 6 baskets, joined by Chloe Shreve who scored 4 baskets. They came back in the second quarter, scoring 32 points and putting them at 55-16 for the final score. This win puts the Central Cobblers at 8-9 as they head into their next home game against Sturgis High School.

The Central Cobbler Boys Varsity team also faced and defeated the Douglas Patriots. After the game, head coach he said the win could really be a big momentum boost for the team. He mentioned that the team has struggled with turnovers, but this time they “kept the foot on the pedal”, shot well, defended well, and rebounded well. He also said that the victory gave the team a sense of relief and confidence moving into their next game on Thursday against Sturgis High School.

Owen Bissonette led the team scoring 6 baskets, while Preston Yellow added 5 and Sean Smith with 4. They Scored the most points during the second quarter with 20 points and scored 32 points in the first half and 33 in the second half. The final score was 65-30, and it put Central’s Boys Varsity team at 4-13 entering their next game on Thursday.
Overall, both Varsity teams brought the energy needed to win and showed growth throughout the game. With that energy and mindset, the cobblers can look forward to carrying that confidence into their upcoming games as the season continues and on their way to the state tournament.
