RAPID CITY, S.D. — Black Hills Community Theatre continues its 58th season with the noir musical City of Angels, opening March 13 at the Historic Theater inside The Performing Arts Center of Rapid City.
The Tony Award-winning musical written by Larry Gelbart, Cy Coleman, and David Zippel follows Stine, a novelist attempting to adapt his detective story for Hollywood in the late 1940s. While Stine navigates the pressures of the film industry, his fictional private eye, Stone, battles crime and corruption in a parallel storyline. Scenes from Stine’s world appear in color, while Stone’s detective story unfolds in stylized black and white.
The cast of local actors features Dakota Morgan as Stine, the writer, and Tom Powers as Stone, the private eye. Playing dual roles in the lives of the two men are Leslie Hopton as Gabby/Bobbi, Rose Lamoureaux as Donna/Oolie, Dave DeChristopher as Buddy/Irwin, Kaitlin Petrushev as Carla/Alaura, Teagan Rosendahl as Avril/Mallory, Jonah Vasquez as Pancho/Munoz, Michael Lytle as Jimmy Powers/Gerald/Peter and Jonathan Bader as Werner/Luther.
The cast also includes the Angel City Four quartet — Garrett Amirehteshami, Tammie McCraw, Lorien Petersen and Brady Riker — along with an ensemble featuring Brianna Bohling, Nadya Ciazynski, Hidie Dahl, David Herr, Daniel Petrushev, Sam Powers, Chami Senarath and Jessie Sewell.
Directed by Kristol McKie, the production features a jazz-inspired score performed by a 14-piece orchestra under music director Vonnie Houchin.
Of the upcoming performance, McKie said: “This production offers a unique opportunity to enjoy a score inspired by the 1940s, brought to life by some of the finest singers from the Black Hills area.”
Performances are scheduled for March 13, 14, 20 and 21 at 7 p.m., and March 15 and 22 at 2 p.m. Tickets range from $25 to $34 and are available through the Performing Arts Center box office, by phone at 605-394-1786 or online at bhct.org. The production contains adult content.
