PIERRE, S.D. – Gov. Larry Rhoden cut the ribbon on the new Edmunds County Jail on Wednesday, continuing his emphasis on support for local law enforcement across South Dakota.
“Keeping South Dakotans safe is the most important duty of government, and our partners in law enforcement are vital to making sure we are successful,” said Rhoden. “Similar to the new prisons the state is building, local jails play a key role in keeping our communities safe. Congratulations to Edmunds County and our law enforcement community for this vital public safety investment!”
The 40-bed facility was designed with cost savings and partnerships in mind. It is equipped with capabilities for video court hearings and the digitizing of legal mail to reduce ongoing costs associated with prisoner transport. The jail will also house inmates from neighboring counties. Walworth County has already signed an agreement to occupy eight of the 40 available beds.
“This jail will be a strong asset to our community, playing a critical role in maintaining order, supporting law enforcement efforts, and ensuring that those who pose a threat are held accountable,” said Edmunds County Sheriff Jonathan Waldner. “I am grateful for Governor Rhoden’s leadership as we work together to enhance public safety and get dangerous criminals off our streets.”
Last month, Rhoden broke ground on a new 1,500-bed men’s prison. Later this summer, a new 300-bed women’s prison with 96 drug treatment beds is set to open. Last year, Rhoden established the Correctional Rehabilitation Task Force and directed $1.5 million toward equipment for inmate education and skills training.
