RAPID CITY, S.D. — The Post 22 Hardhats saved their best baseball for the final innings Saturday night, rallying from an early four-run deficit to defeat the Missoula Mavericks 6-5.
It was a game filled with energy, excitement, and determination from the opening pitch until the final out. Although the Hardhats found themselves trailing 4-0 after the first inning, they never stopped believing they could come back.
Missoula jumped out to an early lead by scoring four runs in the top of the first inning. After that, the Hardhats’ defense settled in and kept the Mavericks off the scoreboard for the next five innings. Missoula added just one more run in the seventh, finishing with five runs on six hits and one error.
Post 22 remained scoreless through the first five innings as the Mavericks continued to hold the advantage. Even with the score staying the same, the Hardhats dugout never lost its energy.
One player who helped keep the team’s spirits high all game long was #13 Brixton Steen, who was constantly encouraging his teammates. Whether players were in the field, at the plate, or in the dugout, Brixton kept everyone talking, smiling, and believing the comeback was possible. That excitement carried throughout the team and into the crowd.
The momentum finally shifted in the bottom of the sixth inning.
With runners on base, #15 Reegan Turnquist stepped to the plate and delivered a clutch triple into the outfield, driving in a run and giving the Hardhats new life. The hit sparked the offense and brought the crowd to its feet as Post 22 cut into the Mavericks’ lead.
The excitement only grew in the bottom of the seventh inning.
With the championship on the line, #19 Lars Kieffer crushed a double that brought another runner home, sending Fitzgerald Stadium into a roar. The dugout erupted as teammates celebrated, knowing they were only one big hit away from completing the comeback.
That hit came moments later.
#30 Brayden Stapert delivered the biggest swing of the night, driving in two runners with a clutch hit that gave the Hardhats a dramatic 6-5 victory. As the winning runs crossed the plate, teammates poured out of the dugout to celebrate an unforgettable championship win.
The victory was a true team effort. After falling behind early, Post 22 stayed composed, played solid defense, and came through with timely hits when they mattered most. Their determination and never-give-up attitude paid off in the final innings.
