STURGIS, SD – As heavy metal fans across the Rapid City region prepare for Megadeth to take the stage at the Sturgis Buffalo Chip on Aug. 8, frontman and lead vocalist Dave Mustaine opened up about the band’s history, evolution, and eventual farewell from the road.
The concert marks a major milestone for the legendary “Big 4” thrash metal outfit as they make their debut at the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally during their tour supporting their 17th, self-titled album. For Sturgis Rally attendees traveling from across the world, the performance offers a rare opportunity to see the heavy metal pioneers deliver their signature fast tempos and intricate guitar riffs.
In an interview with Fox Radio Host Terrence Long, Mustaine reflected on nearly 50 years in the music industry and addressed the band’s various roster shifts over the decades. Despite the changing personnel, Mustaine noted that the actual list of official members remains relatively small compared to other long-running artists.
“For me, I wished that it was just one lineup the whole time, honestly,” Mustaine said. “But you don’t always have that luxury of playing with the same people for long periods of time, especially in something as intense as thrash metal, because, you know, face it, thrash metal is a young man’s game, and certain people grow up, they grow old.”
Mustaine also discussed navigating commercial pressure over the years, including during the release of the band’s late-1990s album “Risk,” where management pushed to replicate previous commercial successes. Rather than chasing corporate formulas or conforming to 1980s hair metal trends – such as the famous hand-painted “no posers” t-shirt worn by Mötley Crüe’s bass player during that era – Mustaine remained steadfast in his artistic identity.
“If I had to become part of a scene that I did not like in order to fit in, I don’t think I would want to be part of that scene,” Mustaine said. “That imposter syndrome is just not me.”

Over the course of their career, Megadeth earned numerous accolades, including a long-awaited Grammy Award. Mustaine recalled the emotional blur of accepting the honor, along with distinct recognition outside the traditional heavy metal genre, such as a Clio Award for business innovation and a Genesis Award from animal protection groups like the ASPCA. The latter was tied to the title track of “Countdown to Extinction,” which was inspired by magazine text brought to him by former drummer Nick Menza.
With the band now performing behind what Mustaine indicated is their final studio album, physical demands have influenced decisions regarding the future of Megadeth live performances. Mustaine cited ongoing hand issues as the primary factor behind stepping away from long-term touring, stating he refuses to perform if he cannot give a top-tier show.
“My hand is giving me problems and I just don’t want to keep playing if I can’t play,” Mustaine said. “I don’t want to go out in front of our fans and not be able to do my best. I want to make sure that I do my best and that fans will always be smacking each other saying, ‘Can you believe what I just saw?’”
For concert attendees heading to the Aug. 8 show at the Buffalo Chip, Mustaine promised an intense, high-energy event designed for diehard metal fans and guitar enthusiasts alike.
“If you’re a guitar player, I would say you can expect a very enjoyable lesson in guitar playing,” Mustaine said. “It’s just fast guitar playing with a lot of melody, and for people who don’t play guitar, it’ll probably blow your mind.”
When asked what he will miss most about performing live, Mustaine pointed directly to the audience connection.
“The faces and seeing everybody, just seeing how their eyes are just wide open watching something that they’ve never seen before,” Mustaine said.
As he prepares for the upcoming Sturgis performance, Mustaine is also celebrating personal milestones off the stage, having recently welcomed his second grandchild.
