STEVENS COUNTY, MINN. — This isn’t a scene from the 2002 science-fiction thriller Signs , but a Minnesota cornfield has become the setting for a real-life mystery that’s out of this world. A farmer combining his field in rural Stevens County got more than a harvest Wednesday, Oc.t 14 when he discovered a large metallic object measuring about 11 feet in diameter — and apparently not manufactured for the farm supply store. The Stevens County Sheriff’s Office received the call around 3:30 p.m., reporting foreign debris in a field in Scott Township. Deputies responded and confirmed the presence of the oversized metal mystery. The sheriff’s office took to social media to describe the object as “presumably a space object,” citing charring on its surface. Officials told KARE 11 the object also bears serial numbers, which could provide a clue to its origin. Apparently, even things that fall out of the sky come with paperwork. The farmer believes the object may have been sitting in the field for about six weeks, judging by the size of the corn growing beneath it. That means the mystery visitor may have arrived long before anyone noticed — and managed to avoid detection through an entire growing season. Whether the object came from a spacecraft, a satellite or something a little more terrestrial remains unknown. No reports of flying saucers, crop circles or suspiciously friendly extraterrestrials have been included in the sheriff’s office’s investigation so far. Several state and federal agencies have been notified and are working with the sheriff’s office to identify the object’s owner and arrange its removal. Authorities say there is no danger to the public. For now, the 11-foot mystery remains in the cornfield while officials work to determine where it came from and who is responsible for retrieving it. One thing appears certain: This was not the kind of foreign object the farmer expected to find while harvesting corn. And if it does turn out to be extraterrestrial, Stevens County may have just landed itself one impressive conversation starter at the local coffee shop. Share via: Facebook Twitter LinkedIn More
