WALL, S.D. – South Dakota Governor Larry Rhoden was on hand to cut the ribbon on the new Single Engine Air Tanker (SEAT) Base in Wall last week. “I’ve been a volunteer fireman my whole life, so I know what it feels like to run into a fire. And my administration continues to fight to ensure firefighters have the resources they need to protect our communities,” said Governor Larry Rhoden. “This new base will play a key role in mitigating wildfires. I have no doubt it will keep the Black Hills and other forest areas like the Cheyenne River Valley safe.” The new SEAT base will shorten the amount of time it takes to respond to fight wildfires. SEATs can haul up to 800 gallons of water or fire retardant to deploy at a point-of-attack, protecting people’s lives and property when every second counts. Earlier this year, Governor Rhoden supported firefighting by cutting the ribbon on two South Dakota Wildland Fire facilities in Hot Springs and Rapid City. He also signed Executive Order 2026-10 to preapprove South Dakota Wildland Fire’s assistance and resources to help rural fire departments outside the Black Hills Forest Fire Protection District.
