RAPID CITY, S.D. – Deadlines are approaching quickly for South Dakota residents who plan to cast a ballot in the upcoming Republican primary runoff election between Governor Larry Rhoden and Toby Doeden.

The South Dakota Secretary of State’s office has established crucial dates for those looking to participate in the high-stakes runoff. To be eligible to vote, individuals must ensure they are properly registered by the voter registration deadline on July 13 by 5pm.

Because South Dakota operates under a partially closed primary system, voters must be registered with the political party holding the primary election. For Independent or Democratic voters in Rapid City who wish to participate in this Republican runoff, the deadline to switch party affiliation is also July 13. To change party affiliation, voters must fill out a voter registration form, sign it, and submit the paper document to their County Auditor. Pennington County’s is now located at 900 Concourse Dr in Rapid City. South Dakota law does not permit voters to submit these updates via fax or email, meaning an original signature must be received by the auditor by the 15-day deadline.

For those who prefer not to vote in person at the polls, absentee voting is currently underway. The absolute last day for a voter to request an absentee ballot is July 27. All requests for an absentee ballot must be submitted before 5 p.m. local time on that day. State law dictates that public officials cannot mail an absentee ballot to any voter after that Monday deadline.

The official runoff election day is scheduled for July 28. Polling places across Pennington County will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. local time on election day.
