RAPID CITY, S.D. — A teenager will serve time in the South Dakota State Penitentiary following a fatal shooting in late 2024.

Isiah Taha received a 10-year sentence on Friday with four years suspended for the death of 16-year-old Kade Potter. Taha was also credited with 692 days of time served in Pennington County Jail.

Taha pled guilty to second-degree manslaughter in September, resolving an earlier first-degree charge. Prosecutors said Taha was highly intoxicated while handling a firearm inside a vehicle near Deadwood Avenue and Omaha Street when the gun went off, fatally striking Potter.

While Potter’s family requested the maximum penalty during sentencing, Taha’s defense pushed for a lighter sentence, citing his remorse and guilty plea.
