RAPID CITY, S.D. – High-level tennis is returning to the Black Hills this month as the Black Hills Tennis Association prepares to host its ninth annual Midland Scientific Open Tennis Tournament. The event will take place from June 26-28 at the Sioux Park Tennis Facility in Rapid City.
The tournament features a 30,000 dollar prize purse, drawing top-tier collegiate and professional tennis players from across the United States. Alongside the open division, the association will run a National Tennis Rating Program level tournament, offering amateur regional players a chance to compete. Organizers expect approximately 80 competitors across both divisions this year as they look to expand the event and attract more spectators.
“We expect to have around 80 competitors in both the open divisions and the NTRP level and are trying to grow our tournament and encourage more spectators,” said Sterling Greni, board president of the Black Hills Tennis Association and CEO of the tournament’s primary sponsor, Midland Scientific Inc.
The three-day event is supported by Midland Scientific Inc. and several local Rapid City businesses. Registration proceeds from the tournament will directly benefit youth scholarships.
As a 501c3 non-profit organization operating for 30 years, the Black Hills Tennis Association utilizes tournament proceeds and community donations to fund tennis scholarships for underserved youth. The program provides recipient children with private club memberships and year-round lessons. The association also hosts community social events to promote the sport locally.
The open division finals are scheduled to take place on Sunday, June 28, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Sioux Park Tennis Facility. More information can be found at bhtennisassociation.com
