Labor Day in New Underwood, S.D. brings the heat with top saddle bronc contenders and payouts
NEW UNDERWOOD, S.D. – There is a bronc match in west river South Dakota where the Great Plains meet the Black Hills and Badlands; where the legacies of former, world-class NFR saddle bronc riders compete side by side with current contenders and up and coming, raw talent.
The 9th Annual New Underwood Roping Club Bronc Match, set for Sunday, Sept. 6, 2026 began small but has become an event favored by cowboys, stock contractors and spectators. Any stand-alone event that rolls out $17,500 in added money garners attention.
Amy Brunson is a volunteer with the New Underwood Roping Club.
The Bronc Match coincides with a day full of activities in New Underwood, celebrating the Labor Day weekend. A Steamburger Feed is being served from 10am-Noon and a Pub Crawl from 11am – 4pm. The Parade, with the theme “America: Celebrating 250 Years” gets underway at 1pm, sharing the lineup with a Car Show. Kids and adult games follow.
The Bronc Match, with a Calcutta at 5pm and the Match at 6pm, serves as a fundraiser for the New Underwood Roping Club.
The event itself draws top saddle bronc riders and stock contractors.
The amount of added money is a barometer of how established and competitive an event is. With $17,500 in added money, the New Underwood Roping Club Bronc Match does more than hold its own.
New Underwood is a small community with a big heart. That’s how Brunson describes the town and the people. And no better place to be this Labor Day. See a complete schedule on Facebook.
