Rapid City’s downtown music scene keeps rolling this summer as Omaha-based cover band Grunge Pop takes the stage for Rapid City Summer Nights on Thursday, June 4. Known throughout the Midwest for blending grunge, pop, rock, dance, and alternative hits into one high-energy live show, the four-piece band has built a reputation as a crowd favorite across Nebraska, Iowa, and South Dakota.

Formed in 2016 by members Chad and Tiffany, Grunge Pop has spent the last decade building a massive catalog of songs and adapting their performances to fit everything from bike rallies and weddings to street dances and festivals. During a recent interview ahead of their Rapid City appearance, vocalist Tiffany described the group as “a variety band” that aims to bring something for everyone to the stage.

“We play just a little bit of everything,” Tiffany said during the interview. “If you like grunge, if you like pop, like everything in between — we’re your band.”

That versatility has become one of the band’s greatest strengths. Rather than sticking to one style, Grunge Pop carefully tailors each setlist to the type of event they’re playing. For Summer Nights, fans can expect a more upbeat and dance-friendly atmosphere designed to appeal to the wide range of concertgoers that fill downtown Rapid City every Thursday evening.

“We want it to be more fun and dancey and poppy and a bit more appealing to everybody,” Tiffany explained.

The band features two guitars, bass, and drums, but their sound stretches far beyond a traditional rock setup. Their live shows mix classic singalong anthems with ‘90s grunge staples and modern pop favorites. Tiffany said some of their favorite songs to perform include Bon Jovi’s “Livin’ on a Prayer,” Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” Pink’s “Raise Your Glass,” and selections from The Smashing Pumpkins.

One thing audiences have come to appreciate is Grunge Pop’s ability to put their own spin on familiar songs instead of simply recreating radio versions note-for-note.

“We kind of put our own twist on things,” Tiffany said. “People really catch onto that.”

That creative approach has helped the band stand out throughout the Midwest music circuit. Tiffany noted that their ability to cover multiple genres has opened doors to a wide range of performances over the years, from private parties and weddings to major regional events like the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.

This year’s Summer Nights performance also carries a deeper personal connection for the group. Tiffany shared that lead singer Chad is originally from Rapid City, with family still living in the area.

“We’re really excited to kind of bring it back,” she said. “We’ve got a lot of family coming.”

The band is no stranger to the Black Hills music scene either, having previously performed during the Sturgis Rally at Loud American Roadhouse. Tiffany also revealed that Chad once had the opportunity to perform “Rockstar” on stage with Nickelback in Fargo after catching the attention of the band through a Nickelback tribute project.

With a blend of nostalgia, party-rock energy, and crowd-pleasing covers spanning multiple decades, Grunge Pop looks poised to deliver one of the more energetic Summer Nights performances of the season.
