The Pennington County Treasurer’s Office is announcing an August 31, 2026, deadline for customers who received a temporary paper registration either printed from our office or emailed to them from the state as a result of the recent Pennington County cybersecurity incident. These customers must visit the Treasurer’s Office by that date to complete their motor vehicle transactions.

This deadline applies only to customers who were issued a temporary registration because the cybersecurity incident prevented the Treasurer’s Office from completing their motor vehicle transactions. It does not apply to temporary paper registrations issued through dealerships or under other normal circumstances.

All other vehicle purchasers remain subject to the standard requirement to transfer the vehicle title within 45 days from the date of purchase. The August 31 deadline does not extend or replace that requirement. Customers who do not complete their title transfer within the 45-day period from their purchase date will be subject to applicable interest and penalties.

Customers who received temporary paper registrations due to the cybersecurity incident must complete their transactions by August 31 to avoid applicable interest and penalties after the deadline.

The Treasurer’s Office has been able to process motor vehicle transactions since July 13th and all property tax payments since August 12.

Customers visiting the Treasurer’s Office should also be aware that the office is currently operating under a traditional first-come, first-served line system rather than the queue system previously used. Customers will be served in the order they arrive.

The Treasurer’s Office is open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Customers are strongly encouraged to arrive at the building by or before 3 p.m. to allow sufficient time to move through the line and reach a service window before closing.

Arriving by 3 p.m. does not guarantee that a customer will reach a service window by 4 p.m. Whether a customer is served before closing depends on the number of customers already in line, the types and complexity of transactions ahead of them, and other operational factors.

Customers who reach a service window by 4 p.m. will be assisted.

Customers are encouraged to plan accordingly, allow adequate time for their visit, and, when possible, avoid waiting until the final days before the August 31 deadline.
