Filmmaker Pierre Coffin is the creator and chief practitioner of Minionese, but it’s a dialect — like most things Minions — that’s taken time to hone. It’s been 16 years since Coffin co-directed “Despicable Me.” He has made three more movies in the franchise. But the Minions, like Coffin’s multiheaded version of Frankenstein’s monster, have often remained a deviling, even mystifying force. After stepping away from the franchise, Coffin returns for “Minions & Monsters.” The concept — that the Minions try to make a monster movie — was too hard to pass up. The film opens Wednesday in theaters.

In a setback for Warner Bros.′ revamped DC movie operations, “Supergirl” was absolutely no match for “Toy Story 5” at the box office, opening a distant second to the Pixar blockbuster. After a near-record debut for an animated movie, “Toy Story 5” remained No. 1 at the box office with $70 million in domestic ticket sales and another $89.1 million overseas. “Supergirl,” however, failed to lift off. It opened with $38 million in U.S. and Canadian theaters, and $30 million in overseas markets. The poor opening weekend for “Supergirl” puts it behind the disappointing debuts of DC busts like “The Flash” and “The Green Lantern,” and only just ahead of “Joker: Folie à Deux.”

A recently opened, first of its kind Chinese queer museum in San Francisco is already having an impact on the surrounding community. The OUT Museum opened just before Pride Month and has prompted Chinese and Chinese American visitors to share moving stories with its founder, Xiangqi Chen, whose LGBTQ+ activism faced censorship in her native China. Situated in the country’s oldest Chinatown, the museum is giving recognition to a demographic that has long felt invisible. Its exhibits are currently housed one room ,with fewer than a dozen artworks including photography and interactive installations. The museum is only open on Saturdays, but there is hope to expand its footprint and to operate beyond weekends.
