RAPID CITY, S.D. — Rapid City Fire Department (RCFD) crews have contained two small grass fires on the south slope of M Hill near the creek after responding to calls around 8:30 a.m.
Emergency responders located two separate fires upon arrival: a larger blaze measuring approximately one-tenth of an acre and a smaller fire spanning just a few feet. Alert pedestrians in the area successfully extinguished the smaller fire, while RCFD firefighters quickly put out the larger one.
Both fires were contained rapidly, and officials confirm that nearby recreational trails remain open.
While the exact cause is currently unknown, authorities believe the fires were human-caused. With conditions remaining dry throughout the area, fire officials ask everyone using local trails and open spaces to exercise extra caution and properly dispose of or extinguish anything that could ignite a fire.
