PIEDMONT, S.D. – Students at Piedmont Valley Elementary were dismissed early Wednesday morning following a main waterline break at the school.

School officials notified families via email at 8:49 a.m. that classes would end at 10 a.m. for the day. Buses were rerouted to transport children back to their homes according to the adjusted schedule.

“Due to a waterline break at Piedmont Valley Elementary, students will be dismissed at 10:00 AM today,” Principal Ethan Dschaak said in the message to parents. “Buses will run accordingly to transport students home.”

The early dismissal led to the cancellation of the Capable Kids after-school program for the remainder of the day. School administrators asked parents requiring special accommodations for student pick-up to contact the main office directly.

Piedmont Valley Elementary, which serves students in the greater Rapid City and Meade County area, has not yet announced if the facility issue will impact classes on Thursday. School officials stated that a follow-up communication regarding tomorrow’s schedule will be sent out to families at a later time.
