Bierbörse Festival Returns to Main Street Square Oct. 3

RAPID CITY, S.D. — Main Street Square’s 17th annual Bierbörse Festival will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 3, in downtown Rapid City. The 21 and older event will feature beer tastings, food trucks, live music and yard games. The festival also includes a beer stock exchange, where drink prices rise and fall based on demand. Dedicated areas will be available for beer tastings and the stock exchange. A valid ID is required for alcohol consumption. (Full story) 


WDTC expands programs, footprint addressing growing enrollment

RAPID CITY, S.D. — Western Dakota Technical College in Rapid City is expanding its programs and footprint to keep up with growing enrollment. The college recently held its annual Career Expo, where high school students got a firsthand look at all the opportunities WDTC has to offer. With more and more students choosing technical education, the college is responding by broadening its course offerings and increasing its capacity to serve the region. Rapid City Transit Seeks Public Input on Micro Transit Study

RAPID CITY, S.D. — Rapid City Transit System is seeking public feedback on a study examining demand based micro transit service. Two public workshops will be held Thursday, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at the Milo Barber Transportation Center, 333 Sixth St., and from 6 to 8 p.m. at General Beadle Elementary School. An online survey is available through Oct. 19. The study will examine ridership, community needs and service gaps and develop recommendations for a possible pilot program. Box Elder to Host First Responder Career Fair

BOX ELDER, S.D. — The City of Box Elder will host its first First Responder Career Fair from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday, Oct. 5, at the Box Elder Event Center. The free event will feature 10 organizations representing law enforcement, fire, dispatch, military and education. Attendees can learn about first responder careers, education and training opportunities and connect with people working in those fields. SpaceX launches 4 astronauts on a fast track to the International Space Station

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — Four astronauts are on their way to the International Space Station following a Florida liftoff. SpaceX launched the U.S., Canadian and Russian crew on Thursday. Although their space station stay will last a long six months, the flight there promises to be the quickest yet for Elon Musk’s company. Commander Jessica Watkins and her crew should arrive at the orbiting lab in a mere eight hours, well before bedtime. Watkins is the first Black woman to lead a crew to orbit. Also on board: Canadian Joshua Kutryk, whose wife will give birth to their third child while he’s away. (Full story)


Federal scholarship for private school and homeschooling opening to most kids in at least 30 states

The Trump administration has proposed rules for a new federal scholarship program that launches at the start of next year. The scholarship can help families pay for private school, homeschooling and other educational expenses. Taxpayers who donate to the scholarship funds will get a federal tax credit. The program aims to support school choice and is expected to benefit about 96% of children in participating states. At least 30 states have opted in so far. The program also allows public school students to use scholarships for tutoring or special education therapies. The IRS and Treasury Department predict it will eventually fund up to 2.2 million scholarships annually. (Full story)


A plumber and a dentist are praised as heroes in FlyDubai near-disaster

JERUSALEM (AP) — A plumber, a dentist and others are being hailed as heroes after a dramatic incident on a flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv. The copilot attacked the captain, causing chaos as the plane plunged. Passengers rushed to the cockpit. A plumber, recalling air disaster films, briefly handled the controls until he said two traveling British pilots stabilized the plane. Meanwhile, a dentist attended to the injured captain. Within minutes of their arrival in Tel Aviv after an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia, Hayoun was meeting Israel’s prime minister while still wearing his bloodied shirt. (Full story)
