Early Voting Begins Friday in Pennington County
RAPID CITY, S.D. — Residents looking to cast their ballots ahead of the upcoming election on November 3rd can participate in early in-person absentee voting starting September 18th in Pennington County. Voting takes place at the Pennington County Auditor’s Office, located in the County Administration Building at 900 Concourse Drive, in Rapid City. The office accepts in-person absentee voters Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. That ballot includes choices for governor, U.S. House and Senate, four ballot measures, a slate of constitutional and statutory officers as well as legislative races and some local races. Great Downtown Pumpkin Festival Returns Saturday
RAPID CITY, S.D. — The Great Downtown Pumpkin Festival is set for this weekend and it’s sure to be a lot of fun. On Saturday from 10 to 4 pumpkins will take over downtown Rapid City from Main Street Square to Memorial Park. There will be local vendors and food trucks, and pumpkin-themed activities during the free event. RAPID CITY, S.D. — Love INC of the Black Hills is celebrating 25 years in the Black Hills with a special 25th Anniversary Open House on Saturday from 9 to 1. The community is invited to join Love INC staff, volunteers, churches, community partners, donors and friends for a morning of celebration, food and fun at Love INC of the Black Hills on East Omaha. The anniversary celebration will include a BBQ lunch, outdoor games and Volunteer Olympics, giving guests an opportunity to celebrate the people who have been at the heart of Love INC’s ministry throughout the years. Miles for Mentoring Walk to Support Rapid City Students
RAPID CITY, S.D. — The Miles for Mentoring event will be held this weekend to raise awareness and funding for the local TeamMates mentoring program benefitting Rapid City Area School students. The event will take place Sunday from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at Founders Park. Participants can show up anytime to walk a mile and learn more about the TeamMates mentoring program. The event is free to participants – to help raise funds for TeamMates, individuals and businesses have pledged donations per mile walked. Body found in Grand Canyon was missing hiker, wife says, bringing flood death toll to 3
GRAND CANYON NATIONAL PARK, Ariz. (AP) — Human remains found in the Grand Canyon this week have been identified as Timothy Allen Smith, the last person missing after the deadly flash flooding in late August. His wife confirmed the discovery Thursday. The flooding, which devastated the Phantom Ranch area, brought the death toll to three. Smith, a pilot from Wyoming, was on a hiking trip with two companions when the flooding hit. Their remains were found earlier. The flooding began August 29 and damaged a crucial water pipeline. Many hiking trails and lodging areas remain closed as repairs continue. (Full story)
Man who sprayed Minnesota Rep. Omar with vinegar sentenced to 14 months in prison
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The man who sprayed vinegar at Democratic U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar during a Minneapolis town hall has been sentenced to 14 months in prison. Anthony Kazmierczak was sentenced Thursday, nearly eight months after the Jan. 27 assault. He was also sentenced to three years of supervised release, which includes no contact with Omar. At the time of the attack, Minneapolis-St. Paul was subject to a federal immigration crackdown that led to angry protests, arrests and the deaths of two U.S. citizens. Kazmierczak was unable to explain his actions during an earlier hearing. Omar was not hurt in the attack and Kazmierczak pleaded guilty to assaulting a U.S. officer. (Full story)
Man accused of ties to bin Laden and tortured after 9/11 has 20-year Guantanamo detention reviewed
FORT MEADE, Md. (AP) — A man initially accused of being a high-profile al-Qaida figure and who was tortured in CIA custody has appeared at a hearing to review his detention. Abu Zubaydah has been held at the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, for 20 years without charges. A government official said Thursday that Zubaydah had “probably” served as one of Osama bin Laden’s most trusted facilitators. Zubaydah was detained after 9/11 and subjected to torture in CIA black sites. His lawyers say he was never in al-Qaida, but they acknowledge he knew bin Laden. They say Zubaydah is no longer a security risk and should be approved for transfer out of Guantanamo. (Full story)
