Update on Fire Spotted on M Hill in Rapid City
RAPID CITY, S.D. — Rapid City firefighters contained two small grass fires on the south slope of M Hill near the creek Sunday morning. Crews responded around 8:30 a.m. and found two separate fires, including one measuring about one tenth of an acre and another spanning only a few feet. Pedestrians extinguished the smaller fire, while firefighters put out the larger blaze. Recreational trails remain open. The cause remains under investigation, but authorities believe the fires were human caused. Fire officials are urging caution in dry conditions and asking people to properly extinguish anything that could start a fire. (Full story)
Pactola North Boat Ramp Set for Temporary Closure Starting Oct. 5
RAPID CITY, S.D. — The Pactola North Boat Ramp will temporarily close beginning at 5 p.m. today for construction, according to the Black Hills National Forest. The ramp, about 15 miles west of Rapid City, is scheduled to remain closed through 11:59 p.m. Jan. 31, 2027, unless the restriction is lifted earlier. Officials said the closure is necessary because of heavy equipment and active work zones in the area. Signs and maps will be posted near the campground and trail to inform visitors. Forest officials said the area will reopen as soon as construction is complete. (Full story)
Rapid City Police Continue Search for Missing 13-Year-Old
RAPID CITY, S.D. — Rapid City police are continuing efforts to locate 13-year-old Miley Fast Wolf, who was reported missing Sept. 30. Police said officers have checked several leads and locations since she was reported missing. Fast Wolf was last seen in the 4900 block of Misty Woods Lane wearing a black shirt, dark blue pants and black shoes. Anyone with information about her whereabouts is asked to contact Rapid City police immediately at 605-394-4131. (Full story)
Box Elder to Host First Responder Career Fair
BOX ELDER, S.D. — The City of Box Elder will host its first First Responder Career Fair from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Today at the Box Elder Event Center. The free event will feature 10 organizations representing law enforcement, fire, dispatch, military and education. Attendees can learn about first responder careers, education and training opportunities and connect with people working in those fields. Christa Pike’s lawyer says she has not regained consciousness since her failed Tennessee execution
Christa Pike remains unconscious and on a ventilator in a Tennessee hospital after a failed execution attempt. Her lawyer, Stephen Ferrell, said Sunday that her prognosis might not be known for days. Pike, now 50, was sentenced to death for a 1995 murder. Tennessee officials gave her two doses of a lethal injection drug Wednesday night, but it didn’t kill her. Her lawyers said her arms were burned and blistered from the drugs. Pike’s medical decisions are being made by someone with her power of attorney, whose identity remains undisclosed. (Full story)
Search ongoing for missing medical flight from Bermuda to Boston as crews plan to scour ocean floor
A search remains ongoing off the Massachusetts coast for an air ambulance carrying six people that disappeared during a flight from Bermuda to Boston. The Federal Aviation Administration told the Coast Guard on Saturday that it had lost contact with the Gulfstream G100 carrying four Canadians and two Bermudian nationals over the Atlantic Ocean. A “debris field” was found later Saturday off the coast of Nantucket. Coast Guard Northeast District Rear Adm. Matt Lake says authorities have searched a large area using fixed-wing aircraft, helicopters, boats and cutters. He says the Coast Guard is in the process of deploying sonar to search the seabed floor. (Full story)
Doctors warn about the risks energy drinks pose to kids. What families need to know
Doctors nationwide have warned for years that energy drinks contain high levels of caffeine that can seriously harm children. Effects can include abnormal heartbeats, increased heart rate, sleep disturbances, high blood pressure and seizures. A newly formed coalition of doctors is highlighting these risks in the wake of a sponsorship deal between Monster Energy and the Big 12 Conference. The group has asked conference leaders to pause the sponsorship and the NCAA to review energy drink marketing to youths in general, citing three deaths. Doctors say they’re not just concerned about Monster but all energy drinks and any similar partnerships. (Full story)
