U.N. Backs Map Showing Africa More Accurately

NEW YORK (AP) — The United Nations General Assembly voted this month to endorse the Equal Earth projection map, which shows Africa more accurately in size than commonly used maps. The vote was 164 countries in favor, six abstaining and the United States opposed. Traditional flat maps, including the centuries-old Mercator projection, distort land masses because converting the three-dimensional Earth into a two-dimensional image requires compromises. The Mercator projection makes areas near the poles, including Greenland, appear larger while making regions closer to the equator, including Africa, appear smaller. (Full story)

North Korea launches 2 ballistic missiles toward the sea and dials up pressure on the US

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — South Korea’s military says North Korea launched two short-range ballistic missiles toward the sea. The launches on Sunday — about three hours apart — came two days after North Korea threatened to bolster its nuclear capabilities in response to U.S. hostilities. They were conducted from North Korea’s eastern coastal Wonsan area. South Korea has boosted its surveillance and is exchanging information with the United States and Japan. The launches follow a series of weapons tests by North Korea, even after the U.S. scaled back a military exercise with South Korea. North Korea’s actions continue to heighten tensions in the region.
