RAPID CITY, S.D. — A Rapid City man is working to provide meals and support for people experiencing homelessness through a new community fundraiser aimed at serving weekly meals to those in need.

Joe Prevratil recently launched the fundraiser after meeting several people experiencing homelessness during his daily travels around the city. Prevratil said many of the people he encountered were struggling with mental illness, addiction or other difficult circumstances while living on the streets.

Prevratil said the experience inspired him to take action in a way he felt could make an immediate difference. “I’ve always believed that food is a basic human right,” Prevratil said, adding that while he cannot solve every challenge people face, he hopes to make sure food is “one less thing to worry about.”

The fundraiser is designed to help purchase food and supplies so volunteers can cook and serve meals to people in need. Prevratil said the group plans to begin by serving one meal each week, with hopes of expanding to several meals weekly as support grows.

Prevratil said he is not working alone on the effort. The owner of Borrachos is providing the use of a food trailer and helping cook meals alongside a group of five volunteers who share a passion for helping others in the community.

In addition to financial donations, organizers are also seeking volunteers willing to donate their time to help prepare and serve meals.

As of this week, the fundraiser had raised $60 toward its $1,400 goal through three donations. Prevratil said every contribution, no matter the amount, helps provide nourishing meals and hope to people facing difficult situations.

“If you’re able to help, any amount makes a difference,” Prevratil said. “Thank you for joining me in doing something selfless for our community.” Donate Here
