EUGENE, Oregon – Rapid City Stevens alumnus and Oregon Duck Simeon Birnbaum won the men’s 1,500-meter run at the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Friday.

Birnbaum, a junior, finished the race in 3:36.05 to win the event over Michigan’s Trent McFarland, who finished in 3:37.18, at the University of Oregon’s Hayward Field.

Birnbaum was a track and cross-country star at Stevens High School in Rapid City, South Dakota. His high school career included 13 South Dakota state championships and setting multiple national records, including the second-fastest U.S. high school time ever in the two-mile run.

Birnbaum, who set the NCAA 1,500-meter national record earlier this season, also qualified in the 5,000 meters but did not finish the race. There was roughly an hour and 45-minute break between the two distance events.
