Rushmore Shootout Baseball Tournament entering its third year, looking to grow.
Rapid City, S.D. — The Rapid City Sliders are hosting their 3rd annual baseball tournament this weekend in Rapid City. The event uses McKeague Field and Star of the West softball complex to host the 50+ teams coming into town for the weekend. This tournament has divisions from 9U to 14U, with the oldest division playing their games at McKeague. The tournament director and head of Sliders Baseball, Tyson Wadell, would love to see the baseball tournament grow and invite additional teams to compete in Rapid City but would need additional fields to grow the event.
The base and mound distances for 12U and up in “travel ball” differ from little league distances so many of the baseball fields that are used by the little leagues in Rapid City, cannot host games without investment. Most communities convert some of their larger softball fields (300ft fences) into baseball fields using portable fencing and portable mounds and must move the bases to host events like the Rushmore Shootout. As the Rushmore Shootout continues to bring in top tier teams into Rapid City, additional fields would be needed to facilitate the growth. Rapid City makes a perfect destination for teams coming into town because of all the attractions in the region that friends, families and fans could visit when they are not playing games.
As travel baseball continues to grow in the region, with both Canyon Lake and Harney Little League creating travel teams within the league, Rapid City baseball will need to work together to grow events like the Shootout. Rapid City is a baseball town, and the opportunities are there for our community and kids. Travel baseball does have its drawbacks, it is expensive because of the travel that is required to compete; but what if we provided opportunities for more teams to compete one weekend at home, could we regain our swagger on the diamond?
A big thank you to the Rapid City Sliders for starting something that we can grow! Another big thank you to the partners at Star of the West complex for allowing the group the play at your facility. And another thank you to the Rapid City Sports Commission and their partners for investing in the fencing, bases and mounds to support this event and other events in Rapid City!
