World Record Track camp trains area athletes
Rapid City, SD. Last weekend nine of the nation’s best track coaches in the nation hosted a camp in Rapid City for aspiring runners, throwers and jumpers. Over 60 athletes and multiple coaches braved the hundred-degree heat to hone their track and field skills at O’Harra Stadium. With the help of Monument Health, everyone had an opportunity to escape the heat and do sport specific weight training and the Sports Performance Institute, Powered by Exos.
Willie Banks, held the world record in the triple jump from 1985-1995 and he and his clinicians which included Erin Aldrich-Shean, four-time NCAA high jump champion, Andre Phillips, 1988 gold medalist and many more that have competed on the worlds stage, are looking to grow the annual event hosted in Rapid City.
Over the past three years, the camp has hosted several SDHSAA state champions on the track and several that have gone on to compete in college track and field.
During the two-day event clinicians not only gave coaching about the skills to be a better runner/thrower/jumper, but they also shared their stories of adversity and life lessons about overcoming adversity to achieve their goals. There was a session on mental health, nutrition and weight training to make these athletes not just better on the track, but better students, athletes and community members.
Dates for the 2027 event have not been set but look for the fourth annual event in July next year.
