RAPID CITY, S.D. — The music, the crowds, the energy, it is all coming back.
After uncertainty about its future, Rapid City Summer Nights is officially returning for a full 13 week season, bringing thousands of people back downtown for one of the community’s most loved summer traditions.
And this year, it is coming back with fresh excitement and a brand new location.
The event will now take place at Sixth Street and Kansas City Street, with the stage set near Hay Camp, creating a new backdrop for the same unforgettable Thursday night experience.
“We got a new location, but otherwise it’s really going to be pretty much the same,” said Summer Nights President, Sandy Schwan.
That means everything people have come to love is still there. Live music filling the streets, cold drinks in hand, food options nearby, and a crowd that turns an ordinary Thursday into something special.
Running from 6 to 9 p.m. each week, Summer Nights transforms downtown into a place where friends meet up, families gather, and visitors quickly feel like locals.
Each night has the potential to bring in thousands of people, creating a kind of energy that is hard to match.
“When you can get three to five thousand people downtown on any given night, you’ve got to capitalize on that,” Schwan said.
That kind of turnout is exactly why so many businesses pushed to bring the event back.
At one point, it nearly didn’t return.
“We were kind of ready to be like, I guess we’re done,” Schwan said. “But businesses came to me and said we’ve got to bring this back because Thursday nights were a ghost town.”
Now, Summer Nights is not just back, it is ready to make this one of its biggest seasons yet.
The lineup will feature a mix of returning favorites and new acts, giving the crowd something different to look forward to each week.
Kicking off the season will be Brandon Jones and his band, setting the tone right out of the gate with a high energy opening night that is sure to draw a crowd.
Later in the summer, fans can look forward to the return of Thirty Two Below on July 2, helping launch the Fourth of July celebration with a night expected to be packed with excitement.
Behind the scenes, community support has played a huge role in making this season happen, including strong backing from city leadership.
And as the countdown to opening night begins, there is still room for the community to be part of it.
“We’re kind of behind the eight ball getting our volunteers rounded up,” Schwan said, inviting local groups to jump in and help bring the event to life.
Because at its core, Summer Nights is more than a concert series.
It is where summer memories are made. It is where the streets fill with music, laughter, and connection.
After the disappointment and uncertainty of it nearly going away, its return feels like something the community truly fought for. In a time when life can feel heavy, this is a reminder of what it looks like to come together, to support one another, and to simply enjoy being present.
Sometimes, it is the simple things, a song, a crowd, a warm night downtown, that remind us everything is going to be okay.
