RAPID CITY, SD — The Monument is set to host three SDHSAA basketball tournaments in two weeks this March.
For the first time since 1961, Sioux Falls will not host a state basketball tournament. The Denny Sanford Premier Center is booked every weekend in March giving Rapid City an opportunity to host two boys’ basketball tournaments in one weekend. Due to this scheduling conflict, the Summit Arena will host the AA Girls tournament March 12-14. The Boys A tournament will be played in the Summit Arena, and the Ice Arena will host the AA Boys tournament the next weekend March 19-21.
Rapid City and the Monument, are not new to this opportunity. The SDHSAA hosted combined Boys & Girls tournaments in Rapid City and Sioux Falls several years ago using both the Ice Arena and the Barnett Arena when Rapid City hosted the event. This same opportunity will come again in 2028 because of another scheduling conflict at the Denny in Sioux Falls.
The team at the Monument are pro’s when hosting multiple events in multiple areas of the building. The Lakota Nation Invitational is a perfect example of the flexibility of the Monument as they host basketball games in three separate spaces at the same time, Barnett Fieldhouse, Ice and Summit Arenas, while also hosting tradeshows, educational sessions and several additional events throughout the building.
The additional tournament will bring additional teams, fans and officials into Rapid City boosting the sales tax collection for March. A special thanks to the team at The Monument and the tournament director and volunteers to pull off a bid month for Rapid City.
