There’s no shortage of incredible motorcycle rides through the Black Hills, but on Saturday, July 25, every mile traveled will carry a purpose far greater than the destination.

The Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association (CVMA®) South Dakota 30-1 is once again hosting Bikes & Boots for Heroes, an annual charity poker run dedicated to helping veterans and military families throughout South Dakota and the Black Hills. Registration begins at 9 a.m. at Black Hills Harley-Davidson, where riders of every experience level and every style of motorcycle are invited to participate.

More than just a scenic ride, the event embodies the organization’s motto: “Vets Helping Vets.”

“We’re an association of combat veterans from every branch of the U.S. Armed Forces who share a passion for motorcycles and a commitment to serving those who served,” said Stephen Elliott of CVMA® South Dakota 30-1. “Everything we do centers around supporting veterans, active-duty service members and their families.”

Every Dollar Stays Local

Funds raised through the poker run, auctions, raffles and other activities go directly toward assisting veterans and veteran-focused organizations throughout South Dakota.

That support can come in many forms, including emergency financial assistance, housing support, accessibility improvements, transportation assistance and aid for veterans facing unexpected hardships.

Over the years, the organization has helped veterans experiencing medical emergencies, families navigating financial crises and nonprofits providing direct services to those who served.

“The needs change every year,” Elliott said. “Our commitment doesn’t.”

More Than a Motorcycle Ride

For many veterans, one of the most difficult transitions after military service is losing the close-knit bond they experienced while serving alongside fellow service members.

Events like Bikes & Boots for Heroes help recreate that sense of connection.

The poker run brings together veterans, first responders, motorcycle enthusiasts, local businesses, families and community members who all rally behind one common goal—supporting those who have sacrificed for our country.

Friendships are formed, stories are shared and new support networks are built throughout the day.

“It’s not just about one event,” Elliott explained. “It’s about creating a community that supports veterans year-round.”

A Ride Through the Heart of the Black Hills

The poker run route takes participants through several iconic Black Hills communities before ending in Sturgis.

The route was intentionally designed to showcase the beauty, history and hospitality of the region while highlighting businesses that proudly support local veterans.

Organizers hope participants leave with unforgettable memories of the ride—and the knowledge that every mile helped make a difference in someone’s life.

Everyone Is Welcome

One of the biggest misconceptions surrounding charity rides is that they’re only for motorcycle club members or military veterans.

That’s simply not the case.

Whether you ride a Harley-Davidson, Gold Wing, sport bike, adventure bike or trike, everyone is welcome.

“You don’t have to be a veteran or belong to a motorcycle club,” Elliott said. “Charity rides are relaxed, fun and family-friendly. You’ll enjoy a beautiful ride, meet great people, have the chance to win prizes and most importantly, you’ll help make a difference in the life of a veteran.”

The Power of Giving Back

While the dollars raised are important, organizers hope participants leave with something even more valuable—a greater understanding of the challenges many veterans continue to face after returning home.

Supporting veterans extends far beyond simply saying “thank you for your service.”

Many continue battling physical injuries, financial hardships and emotional struggles long after their military careers end.

“Communities can make a tremendous difference simply by showing support and being involved,” Elliott said.

Rather than pointing to one individual success story, CVMA members say they’re inspired by the many veterans they’ve helped over the years—especially those who later return to volunteer and help another veteran in need.

That full-circle moment perfectly captures the organization’s mission of “Vets Helping Vets.”

How to Participate

Registration will take place the morning of the event beginning at 9 a.m. under the CVMA tent at Black Hills Harley-Davidson.

Whether you’re a lifelong rider or participating in your first charity poker run, Bikes & Boots for Heroes offers an opportunity to enjoy one of America’s greatest motorcycle destinations while directly supporting the men and women who have served our country.

Sometimes the most meaningful ride isn’t about where you’re going.

It’s about who you’re riding for.
