Black Hills Steam & Gas Threshing Bee

STURGIS, S.D. – For a lot of folks, the annual Black Hills Steam & Gas Threshing Bee happening this weekend (August 21-23, 2026) east of Sturgis, is a family affair that runs generations deep.

Take Ryder Grubl, the seven-year-old-son of Adam and Kayla Grubl, sixth generation ranchers in Meade County.

This is his fourth year at the Threshing Bee. Last year, he went on to the state competition where he qualified for the National Pedal Pull Championships.

In a typical 7-year-old division for kids’ pedal tractor pulls, kids generally pull a starting weighted load ranging from 50 to 100 pounds, with top competitors managing total resistance loads up to 120 to 200+ pounds depending on the specific event rules. As they get older, they will pull even more weight.

Along with competing in the Kid’s Tractor Pull at the Threshing Bee, Ryder also shows and when he’s not competing, he’s working.

His favorite things to do at the Black Hills Steam & Gas Threshing Bee include the bouncy castle and driving in the daily parade. But his absolute favorite involves his Dad, Adam.

The Kid’s Pedal Tractor Pull on Saturday is open to all kids. Pedal tractors are provided and entry fees are paid by generous sponsors American Ag Video Auction and American Ag Equipment.

Admission to the Black Hills Steam & Gas Threshing Bee is also free to kids ages 12 and under. And there are plenty of attractions for adults as well. From historic buildings, to threshing demonstrations and tractor pulls and rodeos, the 58th Annual Black Hills Steam & Gas Threshing Bee that runs through Sunday on the Western Dakota Antique grounds on Alkali Road, east of Sturgis, offers something for everyone.
