With three days left, Pierre tackles state spending, property taxes, data centers, and nicotine on Tuesday.

The South Dakota Legislature hits day 35 of 38 Tuesday.

The regular session closes Thursday.

The Joint Committee on Appropriations meets at 8 a.m. The committee sets the budget for the Bureau of Finance and Management, School and Public Lands, the Attorney General, the Department of Social Services, the Department of Education, and other agencies.

The JCA also takes up HB 1051. The bill revises property tax levies for school districts. It also changes the state aid to general formula and the special education formula.

HB 1139 also comes before the JCA. That bill funds the ordinary expenses of state government.

The House and Senate both convene at 11 a.m.

The Senate could take up SB 135. The bill regulates data centers and seeks to shield residents from utility cost spikes tied to data center growth. The Senate could also consider SB 159, which raises the state’s minimum marriage age.

The House could take up HB 1220. The bill regulates the sale of nicotine products in South Dakota.

Lawmakers also watch SB 245 this week. The Senate may consider the House amendment as early as Wednesday. As amended, the bill would direct the equivalent of 0.3 percentage points of certain state sales and use tax collections to a homeowner property tax reduction fund starting Aug. 1, 2027. It would also transfer about $55.6 million into the fund on July 1, 2026.

Most committees have wrapped their work. Three days remain.
