GRAND ISLAND, Neb. – South Dakota National Guard members were among nearly 200 Soldiers and Airmen who competed in the 2026 All Guard Endurance Team Trials held April 10 and 11 in Grand Island, Nebraska.

The event brought together competitors from 46 states and three territories, along with more than 240 civilian participants, for one of the National Guard’s most physically demanding competitions. Participants competed in a DEKAFIT event, which included a series of fitness challenges combined with running segments designed to test endurance, strength and overall performance.

South Dakota had a strong showing at the national level, finishing third overall in the top state team rankings behind Florida and Massachusetts. The state also had five members selected to the 2026 All Guard Endurance Team, tying Nebraska for the highest number of athletes chosen from a single state.

The trials are part of the National Guard Competitive Events Program, which focuses on recruiting, community engagement and showcasing the capabilities of Guard members across the country. Organizers say the event highlights both athletic excellence and the role of the National Guard in building connections with communities nationwide.

Competitors completed a course made up of 10 fitness zones separated by 500 meter runs, totaling 5 kilometers. Each station included exercises such as lunges, rowing, box jumps, sled pushes and burpees, with strict judging standards and time penalties for missed repetitions or laps.

Following the competition, the top 64 athletes were selected to form the All Guard Endurance Team. Those selected will travel across the country to compete in major events, representing the National Guard and their home states at a national level.

Officials say the program continues to grow in visibility and participation, providing opportunities for service members to compete while promoting fitness, teamwork and pride within the National Guard.
