SPEARFISH, SD – The Spearfish Post 164 Spartans kept the pressure on the Sturgis Post 33 defense with a mix of timely hitting, small ball and aggressive base running to win both games of a windy doubleheader on Sunday at Black Hills Energy Field.

The Spartans took game one by a score of 10-0 in six innings due to the mercy rule, and had to fight to win game two, 7-4.

In game one, Post 164 had a 2-0 lead after the first inning, then added five runs in the third and three more in the sixth to secure the victory.

Carson Wood got the pitching win for Spearfish, giving up six hits while striking out five and walking two. The Spartans had eight hits and were led by Tucker Olson, who went 2-for-4 with three runs scored.

Blake Kaufman took the pitching loss for Sturgis, throwing 108 pitches over 4 1/3 innings, striking out five and walking two. Jeren Andrzejewski went 3-for-3 at the plate for Post 33, who pounded out six hits as a team. The Titans committed six errors in game one.

In game two, players had to battle gusty northwest winds, causing fielding errors by both squads. The Spartans and Titans were tied at 2-2 headed into the bottom of the third inning, when two Sturgis errors allowed two Spearfish runs, giving Post 164 a 4-2 lead.

The Spartans plated three more runs in sixth to take a 7-2 lead, but Sturgis kept fighting, scoring two runs of their own in the top of the seventh to cut into the Spearfish lead, but it was too little, too late for Post 33. Post 164 held on for the 7-4 win in game two.

Walker Viessman earned the pitching win for Spearfish (11-12), giving up four hits and one earned run, striking out six and walking three on 101 pitches. The Spartans had six hits and were led by Viessman, who went 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Spearfish had one fielding error.

Landon Lyons pitched a solid game for Post 33, but took the loss. Lyons threw 107 pitches over 5 2/3 innings, giving up six hits and two earned runs while striking out two and walking four. Brody Royer was a force at the plate, going 4-for-4 with a double and three singles. The Titans finished with five errors.

Sturgis Post 33 dropped to 5-12 on the season and are in action next on Wednesday as they travel to Pete Lien Field in Rapid City to take on Post 320.
