RAPID CITY, SD – A cinematic journey that began more than two decades ago in the Black Hills is finally reaching its destination.
Heart of the Rebellion, an ambitious feature-length Star Wars fan film, is set to premiere at the historic Elks Theatre on May 4 at 7 p.m. The screening marks the conclusion of a production cycle that spanned 23 years, involving hundreds of local contributors and a persistent commitment to a childhood dream.
The project first began filming in 2003, led by local filmmakers and brothers Marc and Michael Linn. At its inception, the production was noted for its scale, utilizing professional actors, detailed sets, and authentic costuming. Nearly 200 people were involved in the initial phases of the film, which was designed to push the boundaries of independent fan-produced content.
As years passed, many in the Rapid City arts community assumed the project had been abandoned. However, the Linn brothers recently decided to revive the production, citing a desire to honor the work put in by their younger selves and the original cast and crew. This revival required a final push of principal photography, extensive editing, and the completion of a graphics-heavy visual effects suite.
The upcoming premiere on Star Wars Day serves as a tribute to the longevity of the local film scene. “We owed it to our younger selves to finish the project,” the brothers noted during the final stages of production as they rallied the original team for the final shoots.
Tickets for the event are expected to draw a crowd of longtime supporters and sci-fi enthusiasts to downtown Rapid City. The Elks Theatre, a landmark of the local community, will host the red-carpet event as the 23-year-old project finally makes its debut on the big screen.
