RAPID CITY, S.D. — On a Super Bowl Monday edition of “Vikings Water Cooler Talk With Stitch and BJ,” presented by GameDay Men’s Health of Rapid City, the hosts mixed postgame reaction with early Minnesota offseason debate, using the Seahawks’ title run as a template for what they want the Vikings to become.
The two recapped a defensive-heavy Super Bowl 60 matchup between Seattle and New England, praising Seattle quarterback Sam Darnold’s role in the championship run while arguing the Seahawks won with balance and a punishing ground game. The hosts singled out running back Kenneth Walker III’s postseason production and physical style, saying the performance showed how a committed rushing attack can carry even when the passing game doesn’t need to do everything.
“They didn’t have to put it all on Sam,” one host said, adding that Seattle’s defense was “scary” and that its championship identity felt familiar to Minnesota’s blueprint.
From there, the episode pivoted quickly to the Vikings, with both hosts saying the Super Bowl reinforced their belief that Minnesota is close — if it makes the right roster and coaching decisions in the coming months.
The hosts repeatedly returned to one theme: a stronger commitment to the run. They argued that last season’s Vikings offense asked too much of its quarterback in key moments and didn’t consistently take pressure off the interior offensive line. They said Minnesota’s best path is a complementary offense built around play-action and efficient throws, paired with a defense they expect to remain among the league’s best.
The conversation then moved to the Vikings’ quarterback room, where the hosts pushed back on what they described as national skepticism toward J.J. McCarthy. They criticized TV and radio analysts they feel have been too quick to dismiss a young quarterback after limited pro action and injuries.
“You cannot assess a young quarterback … off of eight games,” one host said, arguing McCarthy has shown enough “intangibles” to merit patience and a real developmental runway.
Still, the hosts acknowledged the tension that comes with a roster built to win now. They discussed the possibility of pursuing Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow — but cautioned against “selling the farm” or creating a top-heavy salary structure that could weaken the rest of the roster.
A “Super Bowl or bust” move for a high-priced quarterback can backfire, they said, pointing to the risk of injuries and to franchise-altering trades that strip depth and draft capital. One host compared the idea to Minnesota’s history of blockbuster deals that didn’t deliver championships and warned that chasing a star could turn the Vikings into a team overly dependent on one player.
Instead, the hosts argued for a Seahawks-like model: develop in-house, build around defense, fill roster holes selectively and avoid splashy moves that compromise long-term flexibility.
“Be more sea hockey, less Bengali,” one host joked, summarizing their preference for steady construction over headline-grabbing swings.
As a practical middle ground, the hosts floated veteran backup options they believe would support McCarthy without creating another expensive quarterback controversy. They mentioned Jacoby Brissett and Joe Flacco as examples of veterans who could steady the position if injuries strike, while remaining comfortable in a non-starting role.
They also discussed other names they don’t want Minnesota to pursue if the goal is stability, saying the Vikings should avoid bringing in another young “project” quarterback that would compete for developmental attention.
The episode closed with a quick look ahead to the offseason calendar. The hosts said the next major inflection point will arrive in March, when free agency begins and the show plans to launch its next season of Vikings-focused episodes.
For now, the Super Bowl served as both a postgame conversation starter and a reminder — in their view — that Minnesota’s path to contention doesn’t require reinvention.
It requires execution.
