STURGIS, SD – Sturgis Post 33 used a seven run seventh inning to put the game out of reach for Belle Fourche Post 32, defeating the Broncs 9-1 on Saturday at Strong Field. The win propelled the Titans to the Sturgis Baseball Rally title.
Belle Fourche was coming off a 16-13 win over the Post 22 Expos, and had to beat the Titans to win the triangular tournament. Bronc starting pitcher Tate Thomsen and Titan right hander Bridger Massa-Battin went toe-to-toe, keeping the hitters on both sides off balance through the first six innings.
Sturgis had a razor-thin 2-1 lead headed into the top of the seventh inning, when Thomsen hit his max pitch count and was replaced by Raif Parmeter. The Titan bats came to life, spraying six hits around Strong Field, plating seven runs to give Post 33 a commanding 9-1 lead they would not relinquish.
The Titans beat the Rapid City Post 22 Expos 7-6 earlier on Saturday when Brody Royer hit a walk-off double, scoring Ethan Cermak to get the win.
Massa-Battin threw a gem for Sturgis Post 33, allowing just six hits and one run over six and two-thirds innings, striking out eight and walking one to earn the win. Trenton Oswald appeared in relief for the Titans. Tate Thomsen took the loss for the Broncs.
Blake Kaufman led Sturgis at the plate, going 2-for-4 with four runs batted in.
Trig Thomsen went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead Belle Fourche Post 32.
Next up for Sturgis Post 33 is a doubleheader against Spearfish Post 164 Sr. Legion on Wednesday at Strong Field. The first game is scheduled for 4pm.
