If you’ve spent any time at Summer Nights or the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally over the past decade, chances are you’ve crossed paths with Tripwire.
The Fargo, North Dakota-based band has become a familiar face in the Black Hills, earning a loyal following not just for its musicianship, but for its unpredictable performances, infectious energy, and ability to turn complete strangers into dancing fans by the end of the night. When Tripwire returns to Summer Nights next week, fans can expect exactly what they’ve come to love: a show that’s equal parts concert, comedy, and controlled chaos. The band’s story stretches back more than 22 years, but lead singer Tim Melin says today’s version of Tripwire has really been defined by the current lineup, which has been together for the past decade.
“We like to focus primarily on the last 10 years or so, since that’s how long this foursome has been together,” Melin said. “We’re able to stay together because we’re legitimately friends and don’t take ourselves too seriously. Every day on the road with us is just a little bit of chaos, but it’s a very happy chaos.”
That friendship has translated into a live show unlike almost anything else on the road. Rather than following a carefully scripted performance, Tripwire thrives on the unexpected.
“I feel like it’s the spontaneity,” Melin said. “We’ve never played the same show twice. Every night is different, and different is good.”
It’s an approach that’s helped the band build a devoted fan base throughout the Black Hills.
“People connect with our vulnerability,” he said. “They like to laugh with us and at us. They see us clowning around on stage, and they can’t help but smile and want to be a part of it.”
That connection has made Summer Nights one of the band’s favorite annual stops. For Melin, there’s something uniquely satisfying about watching downtown Rapid City slowly transform throughout the evening.
“I love the challenge of starting a night off with an empty dance floor, only to have it completely packed by the end of the show,” he said.
“The beginning of Summer Nights is always a bit slow because it’s usually incredibly hot and people are walking around downtown checking out the booths and grabbing drinks. Then it’s our job to make them want to party.”
Even after more than two decades together, Tripwire continues finding new ways to surprise audiences. Along with adding new songs and fresh merchandise, the band constantly reinvents its live performance.
“We’re always updating what we do on stage,” Melin said. “We’ll take old songs and put a spin on them that people aren’t expecting, make up new dances on the spot, or call audience members up to perform with us. You name it, we make it work.”
For anyone who’s never experienced Tripwire before, Melin says the band’s appeal goes far beyond simply playing cover songs.
“Do you like music? Or comedy? Or theatre? Or dancing?” he said. “If you answer yes to any of these, you’re gonna have a good time at our show.”
He also has a message for anyone unsure if they’ll enjoy every song on the setlist.
“If you don’t care for a song we’re playing, wait two minutes and you’ll love the next one.”
Ultimately, that’s become the secret behind Tripwire’s staying power. Whether they’re entertaining longtime fans during the Sturgis Rally or introducing themselves to first-time listeners at Summer Nights, their mission has never changed.
“The best part about a Tripwire show,” Melin said, “is you’re gonna leave happy.”
Tripwire returns to the Summer Nights stage Thursday July 30th, bringing two decades of experience, endless spontaneity, and the kind of high-energy performance that’s helped make them one of the Black Hills’ favorite returning bands. If history is any indication, don’t be surprised if a quiet downtown crowd turns into one big dance party before the night is over.
