John Rich and Donald Trump

John Rich has a reputation as a fierce property rights advocate

WASHINGTON, D.C. — In an unexpected fusion of Nashville stardom and federal policy, President Donald Trump has appointed country music star John Rich as the nation’s new Special Envoy for American Landowners.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) formally announced the appointment on Wednesday, detailing a role that will see the Big & Rich frontman transition from the stage to the frontlines of rural advocacy and private property rights.

According to a statement released by USDA Secretary Brooke Rollins, Rich will engage directly with farmers, ranchers, and private landowners across the country. His primary directive is to address what the administration describes as challenges posed by government overreach, activist pressure campaigns, and outside interests threatening the long-term viability of rural communities.

A major focal point of Rich’s assignment will be defending landowners facing mounting pressure from large-scale solar and wind developments, projects that the administration argues often encroach upon productive farmland and ranchland.

“Being a landowner is a foundational tenet of what it means to be an American,” Rich said following the announcement. “For far too long, powerful companies and agencies have treated American landowners as nothing more than lowly peasants who stand in the way of them and their billions. Protecting private property rights and ensuring that landowners are not harassed, intimidated, or pressured by outside interests will be at the heart of this mission.”

While the appointment may surprise Washington insiders, Rich has quietly built a reputation as a fierce property rights advocate in his home state of Tennessee.

Rich’s ties to President Trump are deeply rooted and stretch back well over a decade, blending mutual business admiration with fierce political loyalty.

The bond was forged in 2011 when Rich competed on—and won—Season 11 of Trump’s reality television show, The Celebrity Apprentice. Throughout the season, Rich impressed the future president with his aggressive fundraising and marketing savvy, ultimately raising $1.5 million for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Trump frequently praised Rich’s leadership and sharp business mind, a sentiment that laid the foundation for a lasting personal friendship.

When Trump entered politics, Rich became one of the entertainment industry’s most unapologetic and vocal defenders of the MAGA movement, regularly performing at campaign events, writing anthems tailored to the political base, and defending the president across national media.

The appointment aligns with the USDA’s recently launched “Farmer and Rancher Freedom Framework,” a sweeping initiative aimed at protecting agricultural heritage from what Secretary Rollins calls “politically motivated lawfare.”

“John Rich has long been a champion for rural America,” Secretary Rollins said in a statement. “I look forward to working alongside him as we continue fighting for the people who feed, fuel, and clothe our nation.”
