Friday Starts the Weekend Off with Creativity, Music, and Live Theater

Looking for something fun to kick off your weekend in Rapid City? Friday has a little bit of everything—from hands-on creativity to live music and theatrical performances.

Start your evening at Coffee and the Cats from 6 to 8 p.m. with the unique Paint Your Own Cat Lamp event. For $25, guests receive a customizable cat-shaped lamp, all painting supplies, a complimentary mocktail, and exclusive time in the Kitty Cove. It’s a laid-back, creative way to unwind—and spend some time with some very cute company.

Also at 6 p.m., head over to Firehouse Pizzeria & Wine Cellars for Singo Bingo, a high-energy twist on traditional bingo. Instead of numbers, players mark off song titles as they hear clips—this week featuring a full lineup of 80s favorite hits. With chances to win drink coupons (or candy for younger players), it’s a nostalgic, interactive night that’s as much about singing along as it is winning.

Live music fans can check out a stacked lineup at the AFL-CIO Labor Temple starting at 7 p.m. Montana’s Superplex headlines the night, joined by local acts Continuum and Howling Embers. The show is all ages with a $10 cover, and Phat Bottom Foods will be on site serving up options for both vegan and omnivore appetites.

Meanwhile, theater lovers won’t want to miss “City of Angels” at the Performing Arts Center of the Black Hills, also at 7 p.m. This clever musical blends Hollywood storytelling with classic noir, following a writer adapting his detective novel for the big screen while his fictional private eye navigates a dangerous underworld. With a talented local cast and a visually striking mix of color and black-and-white staging, it’s a standout production running throughout the weekend.

Saturday Brings Community, Creativity, and Big Nightlife Energy

From 12 to 2 p.m., stop by Dandelion Bouquet for Meet the Artists of Dandelion Bouquet. This open-house style event gives guests the chance to connect with local creators—including authors, candle makers, photographers, and fiber artists—while learning about the stories and inspiration behind their work. It’s a great reminder of the talent that makes the Black Hills creative scene so special.

At 6 p.m., the Dahl Arts Center hosts a Women’s Showcase in celebration of Women’s History Month. The evening features a diverse lineup of musicians, poets, and storytellers including Abbey Leach, Kenna Cook, Lily Mendoza, Natalie Slack, and more. Expect an inspiring night highlighting powerful voices from across the local arts community.

Also Saturday evening, head to Aby’s Rapid City for something completely different with “The O’Hara Effect: The Many Faces of Catherine.” Doors open at 6:30 p.m., with the show starting at 7:30 p.m. This drag performance celebrates comedy legend Catherine O’Hara through bold, campy interpretations of her most iconic characters. With high fashion, outrageous accents, and unforgettable performances, it promises a night full of laughs and personality.

Then close out your Saturday night at the 445 Lounge & Grill starting at 8 p.m. for the 2026 Buffalo Chip Poster Model Search. This high-energy event features drink specials, giveaways, and opportunities for attendees to win concert tickets. Contestants will compete for a chance to become the face of the Sturgis Buffalo Chip, with the grand prize totaling $18,000 in cash and prizes. It’s shaping up to be one of the liveliest parties of the weekend.
