RAPID CITY, S.D. — Young men from communities across western South Dakota recently gathered as part of the West River delegation at South Dakota Boys State, a leadership and citizenship program that brings high school students together to learn about government, public service and civic responsibility.

The West River group included 17 participants from Post 22, along with two students each from Hot Springs, Sturgis, Lemmon and Spearfish. Additional delegates represented Lead, Philip and New Underwood. The students joined others from across the state for a week of leadership development, hands on government activities and educational opportunities.

Supporting the group were several counselors and mentors with strong ties to leadership and public service. Returning counselors included Joe Juenger of the United States Military Academy at West Point and Blixa Broussard of Harvard University. Lewis Carlyle, who represented South Dakota at Boys Nation last year, also returned to help guide participants through the program.

Local volunteers Grant Lolley, Evan Juelfs and Kanin Booth also served as counselors, helping students navigate the week’s activities and leadership exercises.

The West River delegation was led by Director Doug Harris. Organizers said the program continues to provide young men with valuable experiences that encourage civic engagement, leadership skills and a greater understanding of government and community service.
