RAPID CITY, S.D. — The Black Hills Military Advisory Coalition will celebrate four decades of honoring local service members and their families during the 40th Annual McBride Military Appreciation BBQ on Friday, July 10.

The free community event will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Central States Fairgrounds and will recognize the airmen of Ellsworth Air Force Base and soldiers of the South Dakota National Guard for their service and commitment to the nation and the Black Hills community.

What began as a small community barbecue and potluck has grown into one of the region’s longest-running military appreciation events. Organizers say the annual gathering now welcomes more than 500 military families and community members each year for an evening of food, entertainment and community fellowship.

The event is free and open to the public, although attendees are encouraged to obtain tickets to be eligible for prize drawings.

Guests can enjoy a traditional barbecue and pig roast, along with a variety of family-friendly activities, including a kids’ zone, first responder displays and entertainment before the evening program.

The Black Hills Military Advisory Coalition said the milestone anniversary is an opportunity for the community to come together and recognize the sacrifices made by local military members and their families while celebrating the strong relationship between the Black Hills and the military community.
