RAPID CITY, S.D. — American Legion Post 22 marked the 107th birthday of The American Legion on March 21 with a celebration honoring service, sacrifice and community.
The annual gathering brought together veterans, families and community members to reflect on the organization’s legacy while recognizing individuals whose work continues that mission.
Adjutant Jackie Miller served as master of ceremonies. Commander Skjoldal delivered the traditional birthday address, highlighting the Legion’s long-standing commitment to veterans, youth and local communities.
Jason Olson was named Educator of the Year and received a $300 award for his contributions to education and mentorship. Lyle Tolsma was honored as Legionnaire of the Year for his dedication and leadership. Marcus LeBlanc, a Rapid City firefighter, was named Firefighter of the Year for his service to public safety and the community.
The event also recognized student achievement. Lewis Carlyle of Stevens High School was named the State Oratorical Contest winner and received a $1,000 scholarship from Post 22. He also earned an additional $1,500 from the South Dakota American Legion and will advance to the national competition for a chance at a $25,000 scholarship.
In a moment symbolizing generations of service, the birthday cake was cut by the youngest and oldest members in attendance, Marcus LeBlanc and Jerome Button.
Throughout the evening, speakers emphasized that while The American Legion is 107 years old, its mission remains the same.
The legacy continues through those who serve, those who lead and those who will carry it forward.
