RAPID CITY, SD – Eighteen-year-old Riley Youngman of Rapid City was placed under arrest for Aggravated Assault, Second Degree Eluding, 2nd Degree Vandalism, and a Warrant, after two incidents Tuesday night and Wednesday morning involving an AR-15-style rifle.
Rapid City Police report that around 7 p.m. on Tuesday, police were dispatched to a report of a vehicle with a passenger who pointed an AR-15-style rifle at another vehicle. It was reported that the suspect vehicle continued to follow the reporting party’s vehicle. The suspect vehicle was located by police, and a traffic stop was initiated in the area of East Boulevard and Saint Joseph Street.
The suspect vehicle pulled into the parking lot of the post office, and the driver was ordered out of the vehicle. Shortly after the driver exited the vehicle, a passenger moved to the driver’s seat, and the vehicle was placed in gear before taking off from the traffic stop. Police pursued the vehicle. At one point during the pursuit, the vehicle struck several road barricades in a construction area on Creek Drive before it turned into the area of 1705 E. Highway 44. Police located the vehicle in the area, abandoned. Police searched the area for the vehicle’s occupants but were unable to locate anyone associated with the vehicle.
At about 12:00 a.m. on October 7, police were called to the 200 block of Bald Eagle Lane for a report of gunshots heard in the area. Witnesses reported seeing a male armed with an AR-15-style rifle in the area where gunshots were reported. On arrival, police observed the male run into an apartment. A perimeter was formed around the building, and officers observed the male suspect jump from a third-floor balcony to a second-floor balcony.
Police entered the second-floor apartment and located the suspect, identified as 18-year-old Riley Youngman of Rapid City, hiding behind an A/C unit. Youngman was taken into custody without further incident. The AR-15-style rifle was located in one of the apartments and was determined to be missing the required serial number for a firearm. Witnesses confirmed Youngman was the passenger who jumped into the driver’s seat of the vehicle during the earlier pursuit.
Youngman was transported to the Pennington County Jail.
