RAPID CITY, SD — The Black Hills Chapter of MATHCOUNTS held its annual regional competition today in Rapid City, bringing together some of the area’s most talented middle‑school mathematicians for a day of fast‑paced problem solving and academic excellence. Over 50 students participated in the competition from 5 different local middle schools, with 12 earning a bid to the State Competition in Pierre in March.
After a highly competitive series of written and buzzer‑round events, Southwest Middle School and Saint Thomas More emerged as the top two teams of the day. Their strong performances earned them advancement to the South Dakota State MATHCOUNTS Competition, which will take place on March 14.
The event showcased not only the students’ mathematical skill but also their teamwork, perseverance, and enthusiasm for STEM learning. The chapter congratulates all participating students and wishes the advancing teams the best of luck as they prepare for the state competition.
The competition is hosted each year by the local chapter of the South Dakota Engineering Society in partnership with the MATHCOUNTS Foundation, a national nonprofit organization. The competition series provides engaging math programs to U.S. middle‑school students to build confidence and problem‑solving abilities. The Black Hills Chapter competition is one of hundreds held nationwide each year in February.
