BOX ELDER, S.D. — A proposed ordinance that would allow residents in certain areas of Box Elder to keep chickens is one step closer to becoming law after receiving approval from the Finance, Legal and Public Safety Committee last week.
According to a post on the City of Box Elder’s official Facebook page, committee members approved revisions to the proposed ordinance, clearing the way for it to be considered by the full City Council at an upcoming meeting. The city noted the proposal is still under review, adding with a lighthearted message that “no eggs hatched just yet, but the process is moving forward.”
The proposed ordinance would amend Chapter 4 of the city’s municipal code to permit residents to keep chickens under specific regulations. The proposal would allow chickens in several zoning districts, including agricultural, rural residential and most residential neighborhoods, while requiring permits for many properties. The ordinance would also establish limits on the number of chickens based on lot size, prohibit roosters, require secure coops and enclosures, and set standards for setbacks, sanitation and annual permit renewals.
City officials also reminded residents that comments posted on Facebook are not considered part of the official public comment process and will not be presented to the City Council. Anyone wishing to provide input on the proposed ordinance is encouraged to submit comments directly to the City Clerk’s Office at cityclerk@boxeldersd.gov before the council takes up the measure.
